P2463 fault code: DPF soot accumulation

Plain-language definition

P2463Warning

Particulate Filter Restriction - Soot Accumulation Bank 1

What does it mean?

The particulate filter (DPF), found mostly on diesel cars, traps soot particles in the exhaust. The soot that builds up is burned inside the filter through regeneration, that is, by keeping the exhaust at a high temperature for a while; the engine computer starts this by itself when needed. Since most cars have a single filter, "Bank 1" in the definition refers to this filter.

The engine computer calculates the amount of soot in the filter from the pressure difference between the filter's inlet and outlet and from driving data. P2463 means this amount, or the filter's resistance, has gone past the set limit; it often appears when regenerations can't complete or can't start at all. The code is about soot build-up; ash, which doesn't burn during regeneration, is a separate matter.

You may notice the DPF warning light coming on, or the engine computer limiting power to protect the engine. If regeneration attempts become more frequent, you may also see the idle speed rise, the fan keep running for a while after the engine stops, or fuel consumption go up.

How serious is it?

Warning

It's rated Warning. As soot builds up, it can get harder for the filter to clean itself while you drive; on some cars, past a set level a regeneration can only be started at a workshop.

Severity is a guide; if the warning light is flashing or you notice symptoms while driving, have the car checked at a workshop.

Common general causes

  • Regenerations not completing because of frequent short trips and low-speed driving
  • Stopping the engine often while a regeneration is running
  • Engine problems that produce too much soot (injectors, EGR, turbo or an air leak)
  • Differential pressure sensor or its hoses giving wrong readings
  • Another fault that prevents regeneration (for example, the exhaust temperature sensor)

The list shows general causes; a workshop finds the actual cause on your car with a check.

How does it appear in the 2dakika report?

P2463Warning

Particulate Filter Restriction - Soot Accumulation Bank 1

If the code is read as a confirmed (stored) fault, the report shows it with the "Warning" severity; in pending or past records, codes that don't request the warning light and aren't critical appear as "Info". If the engine computer stored them, the conditions when the fault was recorded (engine temperature, rpm, speed) are shown too.

Read this code with the OBD-X1, and clear it from the app after the repair.

Clearing the code doesn't fix the fault; if the problem persists, the code comes back.
