P2453 fault code: DPF pressure sensor reading problem

Plain-language definition

P2453Warning

Particulate Filter Pressure Sensor A Circuit Range/Performance

What does it mean?

The diesel particulate filter (DPF) pressure sensor compares the exhaust pressure in front of and behind the filter; usually two thin hoses or pipes run to the sensor from these two points. Because the engine computer uses this measurement to calculate how full the filter is, the value has to be reliable.

P2453 is stored when the sensor's signal is electrically within limits but the value it measures doesn't fit the conditions. For example, with the engine stopped the pressure difference should be close to zero, and with the engine running it should rise as engine speed goes up. If the value is different from what it should be, or doesn't change at all, the engine computer doesn't trust the reading.

One common cause of this code is the sensor hoses: they may be cracked, have come loose, be clogged with soot or condensed water, or have been fitted with the inlet and outlet swapped during a repair. As for symptoms, you may notice the check engine light or a DPF warning coming on and, on some cars, power being limited.

How serious is it?

Warning

It's a Warning-level code and is often caused by a simple hose or sensor problem. Still, until the reading is right again, the engine computer may not be able to correctly calculate how full the filter is.

Severity is a guide; if the warning light is flashing or you notice symptoms while driving, have the car checked at a workshop.

Common general causes

  • Sensor hoses that are cracked, have come loose, or are clogged with soot or condensed water
  • The differential pressure sensor's reading drifting over time, or the sensor failing
  • The sensor or hoses fitted incorrectly after a repair (inlet and outlet swapped)
  • A leak in the exhaust before the DPF
  • The reading going outside the expected range because the filter is overloaded or damaged

The list shows general causes; a workshop finds the actual cause on your car with a check.

How does it appear in the 2dakika report?

P2453Warning

Particulate Filter Pressure Sensor A Circuit Range/Performance

If the code is read as a confirmed (stored) fault, the report shows it with the "Warning" severity; in pending or past records, codes that don't request the warning light and aren't critical appear as "Info". If the engine computer stored them, the conditions when the fault was recorded (engine temperature, rpm, speed) are shown too.

Read this code with the OBD-X1, and clear it from the app after the repair.

Clearing the code doesn't fix the fault; if the problem persists, the code comes back.
