P244A fault code: DPF differential pressure too low

Plain-language definition

P244AWarning

Particulate Filter Differential Pressure Too Low Bank 1

What does it mean?

On most diesel cars, the exhaust pressure at the inlet and at the outlet of the diesel particulate filter (DPF) is compared using a differential pressure sensor. Because the exhaust gas meets some resistance as it passes through the filter, the pressure at the inlet is normally higher than at the outlet. By looking at this difference, the engine computer keeps track of how full the filter is and whether it is still intact.

P244A is stored when the measured pressure difference stays clearly lower than expected for the engine's speed and load at that moment. This can mean the exhaust gas is getting through the filter more easily than it should; there may be damage inside the filter, such as cracking or melting. But the sensor, or the hoses leading to it, giving a wrong reading can produce the same picture.

The check engine light or a DPF warning may come on. Because the engine computer can't properly track how full the filter is, the regeneration pattern may be disrupted, and on some cars engine power may be limited. If the filter is damaged, you may notice more soot or black smoke than usual coming from the exhaust.

How serious is it?

Warning

It's a Warning-level code. The cause may be a simple hose problem or damage inside the filter; a damaged filter may not trap enough soot.

Severity is a guide; if the warning light is flashing or you notice symptoms while driving, have the car checked at a workshop.

Common general causes

  • Hoses to the differential pressure sensor that have come loose, cracked, become clogged or been connected the wrong way
  • A faulty differential pressure sensor, or one that measures incorrectly
  • A leak in the exhaust before the DPF (a loose joint, a cracked pipe)
  • Damage inside the filter, such as cracking or melting

The list shows general causes; a workshop finds the actual cause on your car with a check.

How does it appear in the 2dakika report?

P244AWarning

Particulate Filter Differential Pressure Too Low Bank 1

If the code is read as a confirmed (stored) fault, the report shows it with the "Warning" severity; in pending or past records, codes that don't request the warning light and aren't critical appear as "Info". If the engine computer stored them, the conditions when the fault was recorded (engine temperature, rpm, speed) are shown too.

Read this code with the OBD-X1, and clear it from the app after the repair.

Clearing the code doesn't fix the fault; if the problem persists, the code comes back.
