P0130 fault code: front oxygen sensor circuit

Plain-language definition

P0130Warning

O2 Sensor Circuit Bank 1 Sensor 1

What does it mean?

The oxygen (lambda) sensor measures the amount of oxygen in the exhaust gas. The engine computer uses this to keep correcting the fuel-air mixture: if the mixture has too much fuel (rich), it reduces the fuel; if it has too much air (lean), it adds fuel. Bank 1 is the exhaust line on the side with cylinder number 1 (inline engines have only one line); Sensor 1 is the sensor before the catalytic converter, in other words the front sensor.

P0130 is stored when the engine computer doesn't get the signal it expects from this sensor: the signal may not change at all, may be stuck at one value, or may go outside its electrical limits. The cause may be the sensor itself, but it may also be wiring and connector problems, or an exhaust leak that distorts the sensor's reading.

If no reliable data comes from the sensor, the engine computer may switch to setting the mixture with fixed values. You may then notice higher fuel consumption, an uneven idle or a stronger exhaust smell; sometimes there's no symptom other than the check engine light.

How serious is it?

Warning

It's a Warning-level code. Without reliable data from the front sensor, the engine computer can't fine-tune the mixture; if this goes on for a long time, fuel consumption may rise and the catalytic converter may be damaged over time.

Severity is a guide; if the warning light is flashing or you notice symptoms while driving, have the car checked at a workshop.

Common general causes

  • The oxygen sensor wearing out with age, or failing
  • Sensor wiring that has melted from exhaust heat or broken, or a corroded connector
  • An exhaust leak ahead of the sensor (in the exhaust manifold or the joint gaskets)
  • The sensor contaminated with oil, coolant or soot deposits
  • Less often, problems coming from the engine computer (ECU)

The list shows general causes; a workshop finds the actual cause on your car with a check.

How does it appear in the 2dakika report?

P0130Warning

O2 Sensor Circuit Bank 1 Sensor 1

If the code is read as a confirmed (stored) fault, the report shows it with the "Warning" severity; in pending or past records, codes that don't request the warning light and aren't critical appear as "Info". If the engine computer stored them, the conditions when the fault was recorded (engine temperature, rpm, speed) are shown too.

Read this code with the OBD-X1, and clear it from the app after the repair.

Clearing the code doesn't fix the fault; if the problem persists, the code comes back.
