P0401 fault code: insufficient EGR flow
Plain-language definition
EGR A Flow Insufficient Detected
What does it mean?
Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) sends a small part of the exhaust gas back to the intake side. This gas lowers the combustion temperature and reduces the formation of harmful gases such as nitrogen oxides (NOx). The engine computer uses the EGR valve to set how much gas is sent back.
When the engine computer opens the EGR valve, it expects a specific change on the intake side. Depending on the engine, it tracks this through the intake manifold pressure, the amount of fresh air measured by the air flow sensor (MAF), or a sensor in the EGR line. If the expected change doesn't appear, or stays too small, P0401 is stored.
Often there's no symptom other than the check engine light. On petrol engines you may notice a knocking sound (detonation) under load or when driving uphill.
How serious is it?
This is a Warning-level code; it shows there's a problem in one of the systems that reduce exhaust emissions. When EGR flow drops, the combustion temperature and nitrogen oxide emissions go up.
Severity is a guide; if the warning light is flashing or you notice symptoms while driving, have the car checked at a workshop.
Common general causes
- Soot (carbon) build-up in the EGR valve or its passages
- EGR valve that doesn't open or opens late
- Clogged EGR cooler (especially on diesel engines)
- Vacuum hose or vacuum valve problem (on vacuum-operated systems)
- Sensor that monitors EGR flow giving wrong readings
The list shows general causes; a workshop finds the actual cause on your car with a check.

How does it appear in the 2dakika report?
EGR A Flow Insufficient Detected
If the code is read as a confirmed (stored) fault, the report shows it with the "Warning" severity; in pending or past records, codes that don't request the warning light and aren't critical appear as "Info". If the engine computer stored them, the conditions when the fault was recorded (engine temperature, rpm, speed) are shown too.
Read this code with the OBD-X1, and clear it from the app after the repair.
Clearing the code doesn't fix the fault; if the problem persists, the code comes back.
