P0172 fault code: fuel mixture too rich (Bank 1)

Plain-language definition

P0172Warning

System Too Rich Bank 1

What does it mean?

The engine computer constantly monitors the air-fuel mixture using readings from the oxygen (lambda) sensor in the exhaust, and corrects the amount of fuel it injects to match. If the mixture is rich, meaning there's too much fuel for the amount of air, it reduces the fuel.

P0172 means this correction has reached its limit on Bank 1: the engine computer has to cut the fuel far more than usual to balance the mixture. Bank 1 is the side with cylinder 1; on single-bank engines the code covers all the cylinders.

You may notice higher fuel consumption, a smell of fuel from the exhaust or a rough idle. If the mixture stays rich for a long time, the spark plugs can get sooty and misfiring can start.

How serious is it?

Warning

This is a Warning-level code. If the rich mixture lasts a long time, the extra fuel can burn in the catalytic converter, overheating it and damaging it over time.

Severity is a guide; if the warning light is flashing or you notice symptoms while driving, have the car checked at a workshop.

Common general causes

  • Inaccurate air flow sensor (MAF)
  • Leaking or dripping injectors
  • High fuel pressure (faulty pressure regulator)
  • Fuel vapour (canister) valve stuck open
  • Temperature sensor showing the engine as colder than it is
  • Oxygen (lambda) sensor giving wrong readings

The list shows general causes; a workshop finds the actual cause on your car with a check.

How does it appear in the 2dakika report?

P0172Warning

System Too Rich Bank 1

If the code is read as a confirmed (stored) fault, the report shows it with the "Warning" severity; in pending or past records, codes that don't request the warning light and aren't critical appear as "Info". If the engine computer stored them, the conditions when the fault was recorded (engine temperature, rpm, speed) are shown too.

Read this code with the OBD-X1, and clear it from the app after the repair.

Clearing the code doesn't fix the fault; if the problem persists, the code comes back.
