P0128 fault code: engine slow to warm up (thermostat)

Plain-language definition

P0128Warning

Coolant Thermostat (Coolant Temperature Below Thermostat Regulating Temperature)

What does it mean?

An engine runs most efficiently and cleanly at a specific operating temperature. When the engine is cold, the thermostat stops coolant from flowing to the radiator so the engine warms up quickly; once the coolant is warm enough, it opens and keeps the temperature steady. P0128 means this warm-up is slower than expected, or the coolant never reaches the temperature the thermostat is set to.

The engine computer monitors the reading from the coolant temperature sensor. Based on information such as the outside air temperature, engine load and elapsed time, it calculates how long the engine should take to warm up; if the sensor's reading doesn't reach the threshold within that time, it stores the code. The code can show up more easily in cold weather and when driving at high speed for a long time.

You may notice the temperature gauge staying lower than usual or rising late, the heater taking longer to warm up or blowing lukewarm air, and higher fuel consumption. As long as the engine computer sees the engine as cold, it keeps the mixture rich, which increases consumption.

How serious is it?

Warning

This is a Warning-level code; it usually points not to a sudden failure but to the engine running cold for longer than it should. If it isn't fixed, fuel consumption can rise and the heater may stay weak.

Severity is a guide; if the warning light is flashing or you notice symptoms while driving, have the car checked at a workshop.

Common general causes

  • A thermostat stuck open or opening too early (the most common cause)
  • The coolant temperature sensor reporting a lower value than the real temperature
  • A problem with the temperature sensor's connector or wiring
  • The radiator fan running more than necessary or all the time
  • Low coolant, or air trapped in the system

The list shows general causes; a workshop finds the actual cause on your car with a check.

Some manufacturers record the same code under their own wording:

Honda
Cooling System Malfunction

How does it appear in the 2dakika report?

P0128Warning

Coolant Thermostat (Coolant Temperature Below Thermostat Regulating Temperature)

If the code is read as a confirmed (stored) fault, the report shows it with the "Warning" severity; in pending or past records, codes that don't request the warning light and aren't critical appear as "Info". If the engine computer stored them, the conditions when the fault was recorded (engine temperature, rpm, speed) are shown too.

Read this code with the OBD-X1, and clear it from the app after the repair.

Clearing the code doesn't fix the fault; if the problem persists, the code comes back.
