P0088 fault code: fuel rail pressure too high

Plain-language definition

P0088Warning

Fuel Rail/System Pressure - Too High Bank 1

What does it mean?

In high-pressure fuel systems (diesel common rail or petrol direct injection), fuel reaches the injectors from the fuel rail at very high pressure. The engine computer measures the rail pressure with a sensor and keeps it at the value it wants using control valves on the pump or the rail.

P0088 is stored when the measured pressure rises clearly above the requested value and the engine computer can't bring it down. This usually has to do with one of the valves that regulate the pressure sticking, or with the pressure sensor measuring incorrectly.

You may notice the engine running harshly, noisily or unevenly, or power being limited; the check engine light may also come on. Some systems have a safety valve that releases excess pressure; when this valve opens, engine power can drop noticeably.

How serious is it?

Warning

It's a Warning-level code. Because excessive fuel pressure can strain the injectors and the high-pressure lines, on many cars the engine computer protects the system by limiting power.

Severity is a guide; if the warning light is flashing or you notice symptoms while driving, have the car checked at a workshop.

Common general causes

  • The fuel quantity control valve on the pump sticking or failing
  • A faulty pressure control valve on the rail (on systems that have one)
  • The fuel pressure sensor giving wrong readings
  • A blocked or crushed fuel return line
  • A poor contact in the wiring and connectors of these valves or the sensor

The list shows general causes; a workshop finds the actual cause on your car with a check.

How does it appear in the 2dakika report?

P0088Warning

Fuel Rail/System Pressure - Too High Bank 1

If the code is read as a confirmed (stored) fault, the report shows it with the "Warning" severity; in pending or past records, codes that don't request the warning light and aren't critical appear as "Info". If the engine computer stored them, the conditions when the fault was recorded (engine temperature, rpm, speed) are shown too.

Read this code with the OBD-X1, and clear it from the app after the repair.

Clearing the code doesn't fix the fault; if the problem persists, the code comes back.
